Charles Wright (the Amazon listing has the name wrong) and his team undertook an intensive survey of land, soils, farming communities, and resource use in Belize (then British Honduras) in 1954, producing this comprehensive 327 page report with six foldout maps. The black and white maps illustrate topics such as landforms and Maya archeological sites. The volume is of great value as an extensively researched, thoughtful, and detailed record of resource use and agricultural practice in Belize in the mid-twentieth century. For each region the authors consider issues concerning processes of change in land use such as the effect of expanding sugar cane plantation on the land-extensive milpa (slash and burn corn farming) agriculture and the impact of hurricanes and over-harvesting on chicle (natural rubber) producers. An unusual appreciation for the rights and potential of Belize's Maya Indians is evident throughout, especially in Appendix 1, "The Agricultural Potential of the Maya Indian," where they write "...they represent the most valuable agricultural asset in British Honduras, worth a dozen overseas investors, development corporations and the like."
